Flying Ebony was an American Thoroughbred racehorse bred by John E. Madden and owned by Gifford A. Cochran. Trained by William B. Duke, Flying Ebony achieved fame for winning the 1925 Kentucky Derby.
He had a powerful build and was known for his speed and ability to close well in races. He was versatile, excelling on both dirt and turf. In the Kentucky Derby, he won by 1 1/2 lengths and set a new track record. Flying Ebony's career earnings totaled $62,420.
He retired to stud in 1926 and passed away in 1943 at the age of 21. Flying Ebony was the last of five Kentucky Derby winners bred or co-bred by John Madden at his Hamburg Place, joining the likes of Old Rosebud, Sir Barton, Paul Jones, and Zev.
Flying Ebony is the horse that defeated my great uncle who finished 2nd on Captain Hal in the 1925 Kentucky Derby.
