Summer Bird was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who achieved notable success during his racing career. Foaled in 2006, he made a significant impact as a talented and versatile competitor.
Owned by Kalarikkal and Vilasini Jayaraman and trained by Tim Ice, Summer Bird showcased his abilities primarily as a three-year-old in 2009. He excelled in classic distance races and displayed his resilience and determination on the racetrack.
Summer Bird's most significant achievements came in the Triple Crown series. He won the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the Triple Crown, with a strong closing kick, defeating the talented Mine That Bird by two and three-quarter lengths. Prior to the Belmont Stakes, he finished sixth in the Kentucky Derby and third in the Preakness Stakes.
In addition to his Belmont Stakes victory, Summer Bird won other notable races, including the Grade 1 Travers Stakes and the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup. These victories further solidified his status as a top-class racehorse.
Summer Bird was known for his versatility, as he demonstrated his capabilities on both dirt and synthetic surfaces. He possessed a strong closing kick and the ability to handle longer distances, making him a formidable competitor.
After his racing career, Summer Bird retired to stud at WinStar Farm in Kentucky. Although his stallion career was cut short due to his untimely death in 2013, he produced a small but promising crop of foals.
Summer Bird's accomplishments, particularly his victory in the Belmont Stakes, cemented his place in racing history. His talent, versatility, and determination on the track continue to be remembered by racing enthusiasts.
